What is an I-9? It doesn’t really affect me or my company, right? WRONG!

I-9s are one of the most overlooked documents that are required by law. An I-9 is a form used to document verification of the identity and employment of each new employee hired by a company to work in the United States – no matter the size of the company. As long as you have employees and pay wages to those employees, you are required to have an I-9 on file.form-I9 Employers must retain original I-9 forms for three years after the employee’s date of hire, or one year after the date employment ends, whichever is later.

OK – so what could happen if I don’t comply with the I-9 laws?

Well, it depends on what part of the form was not completed correctly and if the error was your 1st, 2nd or 3rd offense. Depending on these things, your company could be fined up to $1100+ per line item/I-9 form that is not completed correctly. There are very detailed instructions on how to have an I-9 form verified and it is very important that you follow these instructions. The solution is as easy as having properly trained personnel to manage your pre-employment/onboarding process, so you don’t have to worry about ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) knocking on your door!
